Do I need something underneath my waterproof flooring for protection?

Yes, no, or maybe. It depends on the type of waterproof floors, the underlayment function, and the subfloor condition. But, again, this is something you should discuss with a flooring expert.

What is an underlayment?

Underlayment is usually a piece of foam, felt, or rubber. It's positioned between the surface and subfloors.
An underlayment eliminates sound, provides cushioning, and protects the floor covering from the bare floor. Sometimes it's a vapor barrier.

Some waterproof flooring options require a vapor barrier. Others do not, such as waterproof vinyl flooring.

Luxury vinyl plank: Yes, to the vapor barrier

Although luxury vinyl plank is waterproof, long-term moisture build-up will damage the floors. In this case, it's better to practice extreme caution to protect your investment!

Waterproof vinyl flooring: no to the vapor barrier

These waterproof floors are entirely and permanently impervious to liquid. They are luxury vinyl (LVF) engineered to be thicker and more durable. They are also constructed with a WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) core.

These technologically advanced cores won't peel or ripple ever. So it doesn't matter how much water there is for how long it stands.

That means they don't need a vapor barrier. However, you may still want one to deaden sound, cushion, and protect.

Same style as LVF

These floors offer an engineered version of LVF with wood, stone, and tile images. Photographs are taken digitally, clear and vibrant with depth, dimension, and textured looks.

Like LVF, these waterproof floors are easy to clean with regular sweeping and periodic mopping. Installation, too, is uncomplicated.
