While granite is the
perennial top choice, other stones like marble and soapstone are just
as eye-catching. Marble countertops are available in many colors and
patterns. The porous stone needs to be sealed periodically. Marble
won’t chip or dent, and it’s heat resistant. Soapstone is
available in a limited number of colors that tend to be darker than
other stones. Heat resistant soapstone does not need to be sealed.
The stone is not affected by acids, and it doesn’t stain.
Quartz, an alternative
to natural stone, is composed of quartz crystals and resin. Kitchen
countertops come in a wide variety of colors and patterns that often
mimic the patterns found in natural stone. Countertops made with this
engineered stone are virtually maintenance-free. Like soapstone, the
nonporous material does not need to be sealed. It is heat and impact
resistant. Also, it tolerates acids and resists stains and scratches.
Quartz is one of the hardest materials available, making it more
durable than granite.
